Why a Commercial Version of WinLTP?
Support for WinLTP development and support has essentially been halved. After that, Bill Anderson (WinLTP's developer) and Graham Collingridge decided that the WinLTP program should begin to support itself, and to keep the advanced capability development on schedule. The other alternative was to halve the advanced development. That meant forming a company (WinLTP Ltd.) and to begin selling at least one commercial version of WinLTP. Because of the dual nature of WinLTP development support (half from external MRC funding, and the other half hopefully from WinLTP sales), we decided to continue to make a Basic Version free, and to charge for an Advanced Version with advanced capabilities. The aim has been that every researcher of synaptic plasticity in the world can use the Basic Version to run basic LTP/LTD or similar synaptic plasticity experiments. We hope that you will support WinLTP by purchasing an Advanced Mode License. This basically subsidizes the free Basic Version by providing technical support to users throughout the world including, most importantly, those that cannot afford to buy expensive data acquisition systems. And it supports further WinLTP advanced development. Currently,
there are no plans for to charge in future versions of WinLTP for running in the
Basic Mode. However future changes
to this policy cannot be ruled out, particularly if external funding further
decreases, or if not enough users purchase the Commercial
Advanced Version.
